Term 3 Week 8, 2022
From our Leadership
Dear St Joseph's Community,
Welcome
I sincerely appreciate your support of my leadership. Feedback is crucial to any leadership position. If you receive an invitation to give feedback on my leadership via email please complete it. It is anonymous and is always valued.
Thanks to Anne Forwell and Emma Davis for their leadership of the school during my long service leave. Upon my return it was lovely to be greeted by the students.
Gratitude Gratitude is so powerful, easily expressed and in fact easy to catch! When we pray before lunch with the students we are modelling gratitude. Let's take the time to practice gratitude daily and regularly.
Parent Forum
During my leave the Parent Forum met once again. The parent forum always has the students of our school at its core in discussions - hence a great decision was made to have a colour run this year. When we told the kids the delight and screams of joy was amazing.
We are in need of many helpers for this event to be a success and run smoothly. Some of the jobs are to prefill the colour canisters, turn up early on the day to assemble obstacles, if you know a business, ask for a small donation for advertising in our newsletter, ensure your child has a cheap white t-shirt……..these are but a few. So Tuesday, 13 September straight after school a very brief meeting will take place to canvas helpers etc. If you cannot attend this meeting and wish to help please contact the office and we will add you to the list. Some parents have already done this - thank you!
Attendance
Attendance at school is not only compulsory but monitored. In fact we get notifications from external agencies when individuals absenteeism is above a certain percentage. It is pleasing to report that student attendance across the school has improved over the past few weeks; thank you and well-done everyone!
High expectations and consistency are the keys to attendance, which leads to improvements in student outcomes. However, if a child is genuinely sick, then they need to be at home, but if they are "sick" (meaning having a sickie!), then they need to be at school....sometimes it's hard to tell the difference!
As for COVID rules; if a student has COVID they're mandated by the NSW Government to remain in isolation for 5 days from the date of the positive test, even without symptoms. If symptoms persist, you are asked to return once a negative test is reached or until you are well enough to attend school.
Father’s Day Celebration
Last Friday we celebrated a wonderful morning with all of our Dad’s and families. Thank you to Year 6 for leading us in prayer.
Sacrament of First Holy Communion
Last Wednesday, the First Communion candidates attended the Parish Mass at St Patrick’s Church and afterwards celebrated their First Reconciliation. We now look forward to these children celebrating their First Communion on Sunday, 18 September 9.30am at St Patrick’s Church. Please keep these children and families in your prayers as they continue their preparation.
Parent Forum Meeting - COLOUR RUN
Get excited everyone as last week the Parent Forum meeting was held and a date was set for the school Colour Run! It will be held at school in the afternoon of Wednesday, 2 November! Students will be able to gather sponsorship for participating in the course as a way to raise money for our school. Check out the photos below of previous Colour Run events!
There will be a meeting in the school library on Tuesday, 13 September at 3.30pm. Please come along as we require helpers to make this a fun day for our students.
Disco
On Tuesday, 20 September a disco will be held from 11.40am until 1.40pm in our Mercy Hall. Students are able to wear mufti clothes to school and there is no cost for this event. We are celebrating a wonderful term of learning. The disco will be held in the school hall and will be followed by an ice block for each student. Thank you to our School Captains Noah and Thomas for putting this idea forward and working with teachers to organise the event.
Speech Competition
Over the last few weeks students in Years 3-6 have been working on creating and presenting a speech on the following topics.
Year 3 - If I had three wishes...
Year 4 - Let me tell you about my family.
Year 5 - I love it when...
Year 6 - Five of my favourite words…
Students will present their speeches to their class and the finalists will present their speeches to the school community on Tuesday, 13 September 9:00am. One speaker from each grade will be selected to take part in the Clarence Schools Public Speaking Competition at St John Paul College on Thursday, 22 September. Finalists from Mary Help of Christians Sawtell, St Augustine’s Coffs Harbour, St Francis Xavier Woolgoolga, St James Yamba, St Mary’s Bellingen, St Joseph’s Maclean, St Joseph’s South Grafton, St Mary’s Grafton, St Mary’s Bowraville and Mount St John’s will be competing. Class In Focus: Stage 3
Stage 3 Camp
Stage 3 had a wonderful experience attending Coffs Coast Adventure Centre during week 2. Below are some comments written by the students;
- At camp we played spotlight at nine at night. When almost everyone was found but there was one person still hiding everyone thought she went missing. It was so much fun. By Pippa
- My friend Lily and I went canoeing at camp. It was all going well until I fell into mud and my shoe fell off and got lost in the mud. We had mud all over ourselves. I didn't get my shoe back. By Eva
- Our favourite part of the Stage 3 camp was that we talked pretty much all night and had a great time telling each other funny stories. By Ty and Callum
- My favourite part about camp was probably tips, spotlight or basketball. Everything we did was fun and I wish we could go again. By Tallon
- In Week 2 Stage 3 went to Coffs Coast Adventure Centre. The best parts for me were canoeing peacefully on the river, the challenging survivor course and the thrill-seeking adrenaline-rushing giant swing. I was the first to the top of the ladder logs and the 6th best in fencing. I was the best cleaner in Stage 3 as well. We played tips and we rolled down the hill. Best of all was Minutes To Win It, my team called “the backwards belly flop”won! There were six meals a day- yum! I was so happy, it was the best experience of my life so far. By Kyle
- Canoeing was very fun! We were in a canoe together and we were amazing at it. We played a game of tips and we were in. We got everyone in a matter of minutes and then the group played a new game where we had to collect the floating balls. The white ones were worth 5 , blue were 1, pink was 2 and so was yellow and we won by 11 points. At the end Eva lost one of her shoes in the mud and came back in with one shoe and her legs were covered in mud. By Thomas and Jackson
- When stage 3 went to camp we had a marvelous time. All the activities were amusing but our personal favourite was the survivor course. In the survivor course there was a range of different challenging activities to complete. There were two teams of six people and 8 activities that you had to complete in a certain amount of time. Some of the activities included getting wet and climbing on things. Stage 3 camp was the best thing we have done all year! By Rachel and Rose.
- My favourite part of camp was canoeing because Eva and I fell out of the canoe at the wrong stop and got all muddy. Eva lost one of her shoes. I also did the survival course, giant swing, minute to win it, ladder logs. The food there in my opinion was tasty, my favourite was the fish and chips we had for lunch. Mrs Smidt made us milo for afternoon tea. By Lily
Gumbaynggirr Language - Liz Hegedus
Ginnagay Ngujawiny -Hello You Mob,
This term Stage 3 have learnt about the Gumbaynggirr Nation 'Muurrbay Tree' - 'The Tree Of Life.'
The Muurrbay Tree is very important to the Gumbaynggirr People as it plays a major role in how our mob comes together for family time.
Muurrbay means 'White Fig Tree' in the Gumbaynggirr language and it was a place where people gathered. They would gather in a season when the fruit was ready for picking and eating. When they gathered, they came from the east and the west. They came from the coast and they came from the mountains. They shared this fruit, and it gave a whole sense of sharing and caring. The people gathered in harmony and togetherness to sing, tell stories and just share the joy of coming together. This is what they did and how important the 'Muurrbay Tree' is that brings everyone together.
I painted our 'St Joseph's Muurrbay Tree.' This painting represents our past, present and future staff and students. We share our lives, families, history and culture with each other to become one.
St Joseph's Muurrbay Tree has a history of Indigenous culture that is instilled from the beginning from our ancestors. It now branches out within our community by sharing our love, culture and history that will be shared forever.
Stage 3 students also had the opportunity to draw their own 'Muurrbay Tree.' If you would like to view their art or our 'St Joseph's Muurrbay Tree', they are currently on display in the library.
