Term 3 Week 4, 2022
From our Leadership
Dear St Joseph's Community,
Welcome
This week we celebrate Australia’s first saint Mary MacKillop. Mary MacKillop founded an order of nuns known as the Brown Josephites. More information about how the school acknowledged this day and Mary MacKillop's life is below. One of Mary MacKillop's famous mantras was:
Farewell Joe Stewart
Joe informed the staff that he needed immediate leave to attend to family issues that have arisen. Joe will return to us mid 2023….if not earlier. Please keep Joe and his family in your prayers and thoughts.
In the meantime Anne and myself have taken over some of Joe's responsibilities. Anne will lead our school in the Mission [religious education] space and I will coordinate Additional Needs. Therese Kay-Lewis will take over some of the mathematics intervention groups.
Could I ask that ALL additional needs education enquires go via the class teacher or the Office. Of course you are most welcome, as always, to make contact directly with myself or Anne.
Important Survey to complete
Feedback from parents is valued and much needed to improve any school. Here is your chance to do just that - http://tellthemfromme.com/9z7p7
The survey is anonymous and is available for this week and next.
Families will also be invited to complete another survey later this month regarding my performance as your school Acting Principal.
We urge your participation in both!
Book Week and Dress Up
Book Week is upon us again - this year the theme is Dreaming with Eyes Open. Our weeks activities are:
- Tuesday/Wednesday 23/24 August - Students can view books to write their wish for purchasing on Thursday. The books purchased are for them to keep. From the books purchased the school receives a percentage which will be spent on library books .
- Thursday August 25 - Dress up day, the parade will take place in Mercy Hall at 9:00am - all families are welcome. Also on this day books can be purchased from 8:30am.
Father’s Day Celebration
We would like to invite all of our families to attend a prayer in our Mercy Hall at 9.45 on Friday 2 September.
This prayer will be followed by open classrooms where families can spend time with their children completing some fun activities in class. We look forward to celebrating with you all.
Professional Learning Teams
Last Thursday, 4 August we were privileged to have Janelle Dickman visit our school. Janelle has been Deputy Principal at Helensvale State High School for the last five years. Her current portfolio focuses on Professional Learning, an area in which she is deeply passionate about.
During her visit she observed our staff collaborating as professional learning teams to discuss the learning of each child in our school and plan their next steps for writing. Janelle also provided feedback as to ways we can improve our work.
Writing Data Wall
With the success of our reading data wall to track our students' achievement, growth and next learning steps we have begun the process of creating a writing data wall for the same purposes. All of our teaching staff have been working on this wall. To assess what each student requires next in the learning all students across the school completed a ‘cold write’ using the writing stimulus below. A ‘cold write’ is where students do not discuss the topic, ideas or what punctuation is required before writing as we normally would in a lesson. This then provides an opportunity for students to display what they know without the assistance from external resources or prompts. It is a very effective way for teachers to see what students can do and plan their next learning steps. Each student is then plotted on the writing wall and we use this wall to discuss what students need to learn next.
Sacrament of First Holy Communion Program.
Lessons have commenced for the preparation of this sacrament. It was wonderful to see how excited the children were in their first lesson as they embark on their faith journey for the final sacrament of initiation into the Catholic Church. The date of the 1st Communion Mass is Sunday, 18 September. Please keep these children and families in your prayers as they continue their preparation.
Stage 3 Mass and Reconciliation
On Wednesday, 31 August at 9:15am, Stage 3 and all First Communion candidates will attend the Parish Mass at St Patrick’s Church.
Following the Mass, the candidates who are preparing for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion will celebrate their First Reconciliation. Parents are always welcome to attend the Mass and sit with your children.
Accendere
On Friday, Year 4 participated in this whole day retreat. All children need to be congratulated for their work and positive contribution throughout the whole day as they explored and shared their thoughts and understanding about what makes a good friend. Thank you Year 4 for your joy and enthusiasm and Ms Vidler for providing such a unique and meaningful experience for the children to participate in.
‘And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.’ John 13: 34-35
Feast Day of Mary MacKillop
On Monday, after the awards ceremony at the weekly assembly, Stage 3 children will lead our school in a prayer celebration to recognise the wonderful works of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint.
Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842 and died in Sydney on 8 August 1909. She took the religious name Mary of the Cross. Responding to the isolation of colonial families, she pioneered a new form of religious life to provide education for their children. She and her sisters shared the life of the poor, offering special care to destitute women and children. She is remembered for her eagerness to discover God's will in all things, for her charity in the face of hardship, and for her abiding trust in God's providence.

Ginnagay Ngujawiny -Hello You Mob,
What a fantastic NAIDOC week.
Last Wednesday and Thursday St Joseph's celebrated NAIDOC week by engaging in an Assembly, Indigenous games, watching McAuley Indigenous students dance, a visit from the NSW Police to talk about their jobs and an opportunity to sit in a patrol car.
All stages participated in five different Indigenous games. The games were based around how Indigenous people lived their lives such as:
'Kuniya'-Python - The aim is to get as close to the python before it turns and chases you. The students had to run to the safety line before being tapped.
'Boomerang' - This game is learning how to throw a boomerang, we used frisbees and balls for safety.
'Kangaroo Relay' - Students had to hop to the other end with a joey in their pouch and a ball between their knees.
'Ngarrang' Lizard - The lizard sits in the middle of the big circle and the students have to tease him. If the lizard chases you, you need to get to the outside of the circle to be safe.
'Bingging' Turtle - There are 7 turtle eggs in the middle of the circle with a mummy and daddy turtle protecting them. Students have to figure out a way to distract the parents so they can sneak in to steal the turtle eggs. If caught the egg goes back and the student sits out.
These games are designed so each child can figure out a way how to outsmart the animal to get what they want.
The McAuley Indigenous students/dancers where absolutey fabulous. They danced a comtemporary dance showing how Indigenous people told their Story through dance
One of the major purposes of traditional Aboriginal dancing is to tell stories, which are passed down through generations. These stories tell about the land, animals, dreamtime, and Aboriginal people. I thank Ellie Munro and the McAuley Indigenous student/dancers for visiting our school and sharing their stories with us.
On Thursday, Senior Constable Jess, Indigenous Liaison Officer Mr John Skinner and Highway Patrol Officer Shaun visited. They spoke to the students about what life was like as a police officer. Senior Constable Jess shared her experiences about being an officer, she showed us all the tools she carries on her everyday to be a police officer.
The children also had the opportunity to sit in a patrol car and learn about the different sirens, radio and visual computer screen. The Stage 3 students had the opportunity to meet with Highway Patrol Officer Shaun, he explained how he uses the speed gun to detect speed. Thank you to Callum for being the guinea pig by running up the road to see if we could pick up his speed. Unfortunately Callum wasn't fast enough to register on the speed gun.
The Stage 3 boys had the best time sitting in the patrol car and giving it some good revs. I think we might have some highway patrol officers in the making.
I would like to thank the teachers, visitors/parents/grandparents, who made time to come to our NAIDOC days. Without you it isn't possible.
I had a fantastic NAIDOC week. I've heard such positive feedback from many students saying how much they really enjoyed all the activities and cannot wait until next year!
Darrundang Ngiinda - Thankyou
