Term 3 Week 2, 2022
From our Leadership
Dear St Joseph's Community,
Welcome to Term 3! We hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing holiday break and are ready for the learning, spirituality and joy that awaits us throughout Term 3. It was beautiful to have our students return to school last week filled with enthusiasm and energy; we have had a terrific start to the term and all students have engaged positively throughout the week.
You Should Be Proud
Parents of Stage 3 students - take a bow!!! There has been only rave reviews about your children from camp organisers and teachers. People spoke about the high quality of the kids' behaviour which included manners, care of themselves and others and the general spirit of fun. We are so proud to have such marvellous ambassadors for our school. Also thanks to Mr Stewart, Mrs Smidt and Mrs Kelly for leaving your family and commitments.
Kindy 2023
Letters of offer for Kindergarten enrolment have been sent to families who have had their Principal Interview. Kindergarten is getting rather large by our standards - this is great news. Many prospective families talked about our school's reputation in the community, which comes from the hard work of staff, the engagement of our children and the lovely way parents feel and talk about the school to family and friends. Thank you!
Naidoc Week
With NAIDOC Week falling on the school holidays each year, we nominate a week close by to enable us to engage more meaningfully with our students to share in the celebration as a school community. We will be celebrating NAIDOC Week next week through a series of class-based and whole school activities. This year’s NAIDOC Week theme of Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! is reflected in these activities and in a whole school Poster-book preparatory activity that will be presented at the Liturgy. More information on our NAIDOC events can be found in Miss Liz's section of the newsletter.
Tell Them From Me Survey
As part of our focus on school improvement we will be participating in an online survey for students – Tell Them From Me® (TTFM®). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve.
Results will show all student scores combined together – it is not possible to single out individual students in the results. The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please inform the school via email using the generic school email address by August 1.
1st Holy Communion
A letter has been sent home with children who have been confirmed and are in Year 4 or above regarding the preparation for the reception of the sacrament of 1st Holy Communion. This sacrament will be held on Sunday, 18 September. Please contact the school if you require further information.
Accendere
Please note the change of date to Friday, 5 August for our Year 4 students who will participate in this one day retreat.
Accendere means to: ‘switch on’, kindle to catch fire, light to strike, to produce/spark the flame.
During the day, children will unpack the following important Gospel message. ‘And now I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you, so you must love one another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.’ John 13: 34-35 (From Year 4 Unit- ‘Living The Law of Love’)
They will explore the theme of Friendship and how they can be 'switched on' for their faith in a positive atmosphere. During the day, they will engage in games and activities that will promote their thinking and understanding about what makes a good friend, how did Jesus treat his friends, who is my neighbour and how to be a good friend. The day will finish with a liturgy prepared by the children and they will also have a shared lunch.
Upcoming Feast Days
Monday, 8 August: The Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. A prayer service for Mary Mackillop will be held after the awards assembly and will be led by Stage 3 students. All are welcome to attend.
Monday, 15 August: Feast of the Assumption of Mary.
School grounds changes
During the school holidays we have ‘chopped and trimmed’ trees around our school grounds. The primary reason for this is that the trees are not the most appropriate for school yards as limbs fall during storms, the roots have caused serious damage to our plumbing and with the rain the soil is so damp some of the trees may have ‘toppled’.
With grass no longer competing with the tree cover we will begin replanting our lawns and generally tidy up our gardens. In the meantime we have moved the students play area to other areas of the school.
We understand that this week some of our students [yes mainly boys] have come home a tad muddy. We do apologise for this and hope to better balance the need for our students to play/run and not be so muddy afterwards!
Uniform
A reminder that footwear for all students is black leather shoes or black leather joggers. At St Joseph's we encourage pride in appearance and compliance with the Uniform policy.

During weeks one and two, Kindergarten students have been learning about addition and subtraction in Maths. They have been looking for the most efficient way to solve addition and subtraction problems and how their learning can be recorded. Kindergarten have also been learning to share their thinking with the whole class, using the teaching strategy ‘fish bowling’. This is where students share their learning with the class at their desks and explain how they solved the given problem.

Welcome back to Term 3. Next week, on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 August St Joseph's will be celebrating NAIDOC 2022.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are about recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year the theme is 'GET UP!' 'STAND UP!' 'SHOW UP!' The theme is about the desire to change the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians to one that is “based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' rights.”
On Wednesday, will be celebrating with Indigenous dance. Performed by McAuley Catholic College Indigenous students. All students will then participate in Indigenous games.
On Thursday, an Indigenous Police Liaison Officer Mr John Skinner will attend our school along with fellow police officers to talk to the students about their jobs as police officers. Students will also have the opportunity to view a police car up close.
